Good Listening Skills And What You Listen To Make A Difference In Your Quality Of Life

Did you know your ear and your ability to listen affects your energy level, the amount of stress you experience; your ability to focus your attention; your ability to focus on and accomplish your goals; your social skills; your self confidence; your imagination; how you use your vision; your balance; your coordination; your movements; your handwriting; your reading ability; your speaking ability, even your body’s digestion, emotions and processes of elimination?

The following checklist enables you to quickly evaluate how your life is being affected by your listening skills.

How are your ear and listening ability affecting your life?

Level of Energy - The ear acts as dynamo, providing us with the energy we need to survive and lead fulfilling lives.

difficulty getting up in the morning
tiredness at the end of the day
habit of procrastinating
hyperactivity
resistance to doing the activities of daily
resistance to doing the activities of daily living/lethargy/apathy

Receptive Listening is our ability to tune in to what’s going on at home, at work, in the classroom.

short attention span
distractibility
misinterpretation of questions/words/sequential directions

Expressive Listening. This is the listening that is directed within. We use it to control our voice when we speak and sing.

flat and monotonous voice
hesitant speech, weak vocabulary
poor sentence structure
overuse of stereotyped expressions
inability to sing in tune
confusion of reversal of letters
poor reading comprehension
poor reading aloud
poor spelling

Social Skills and Life Patterns are often affected by a listening difficulty.

low tolerance or frustration
poor self-confidence
poor self-image
high stress level, short fuse
difficulty establishing and maintaining connections

Motor Skills. The ear of the body, which controls balance, coordination and body image needs close attention.

fidgety behavior
